Why we think this

The dominant mechanism this weekend is not long-range transport, it is local pooling: winds are forecast at 0–3 mph from the N/NW/WNW, which is too weak to ventilate the Zigzag valley but also too weak to import a big plume, and the forecast already says 'patchy smoke' overnight — that is nocturnal drainage from the small nearby fires settling into the valley and burning off by midday, which is exactly the signature that produces 24-hour averages in the 50–90 band and is what the 58 at Multorpor is measuring right now. I explicitly checked the bearings rather than assuming the mountain protects the house: Grasshopper (93,744 acres) and WEST 8 are the only fires east of the crest, and the ensembles show 4% offshore member-days against a 31% climatological rate — a 27-point negative departure, with literally zero offshore members on the 28th and 29th — so the big fire is the least of the problems and I am weighting the east-wind route down hard rather than fattening that tail out of habit. The fires that actually matter are Mitchell, The Narrows and Austin to the S/SSW at 12–19 miles and Sweetwater and Vaughan to the W/WSW at 19–32 miles, all on the same side of the crest as the house; Austin at 6,909 acres and 0% contained is the single most consequential object in the pack, because a wind-driven northward run up the Salmon drainage needs no synoptic help to reach Welches.

A normal late August here is Clear - median AQI 33 across the last 4 years. On these exact dates: 2025: 43 · 2024: 28 · 2023: 29 · 2022: 30.

We are forecasting a worst day of 69, 36 points above that base rate. That departure rests entirely on the reasoning above; judge it for yourself.

What the bad version needs:
Austin (6,909 acres, 0% contained, 18.6 mi due south) or The Narrows (241 acres, 0% contained, 13.9 mi SSW) — both on the WEST side of the crest, so Mt Hood shields nothing — makes an afternoon run on a hot, cured-fuel day with any southerly component to the wind. → Winds stay at the forecast 0–3 mph, so nothing flushes the drainage; the plume slumps downslope after sunset and pools in the Zigzag/Sandy River valley where the house sits. → A strong morning inversion holds it in place past 10am, so the smoke is in the air for enough hours to drag the 24-hour average past 100 — and possibly past 150 if it repeats the following night.
First visible signal: The Government Camp / Multorpor monitor on the AirNow app climbing through 90–100 in the evening instead of settling back toward 50 — an overnight jump there leads the house by hours. Visually: smoke visible on the ridge to the south at sunset rather than just general haze. - about 1 days ahead
Key drivers, and what would change our minds
  • Ensemble east-wind departure of -27 points (4% vs 31% climatology), with zero offshore members on 8/28 and 8/29 — the Grasshopper-over-the-crest scenario is substantially de-rated
  • Austin Fire: 6,909 acres, 0% contained, 18.6 mi due SOUTH — same side of the crest as the house, so terrain shields nothing
  • Light 0–3 mph winds all week: no ventilation, but also no import of a big plume — stagnation without transport is a Moderate signature, not an Unhealthy one
  • Live monitor 8.7 miles away reading 58 right now, which lands almost exactly on the season-anomaly-adjusted climatology (33 x ~1.8) and validates the calibration
  • Grasshopper at 76% containment and improving; the 24% of uncontained line still smolders but has no efficient path west
  • Three fires within 42 miles (Sweetwater, Vaughan, WEST 8) with no reported acreage or containment — unquantified, and Sweetwater is 19 mi due west, upwind under the forecast NW flow
  • The Government Camp AQI on your phone reading above 100 on Wednesday or Thursday instead of hovering near 50–60 — that means the pooling is deepening, not cycling
  • The word 'east' or 'northeast' appearing in the NWS wind forecast for Friday–Sunday, or a Red Flag Warning posted for the Cascade foothills
  • Austin or The Narrows reported growing north toward the Salmon River, or Austin's acreage jumping by more than half in a day
  • A brand-new fire reported anywhere in the Sandy, Zigzag, Salmon River or Bull Run drainages — closer than 12 miles is a different forecast entirely
  • Any Level 1 evacuation notice for the Hoodland corridor, or a US-26 restriction on TripCheck
  • The opposite: a forecast for a strong marine push with 10–15 mph westerly wind and morning clouds at the coast, which would scour the valley and push my p50 down into the 40s

The biggest hole in this forecast: 2 of the nearby fires (Sweetwater, Vaughan) have no size reported yet. Whether those are 300-acre creepers or 20,000-acre runners is most of the answer.

Pack this regardless

  • N95 or KN95 respirators, at least two per person — fit-tested-ish adult sizes, and smaller ones if kids are coming
  • One portable HEPA air purifier for the main sleeping area, or a box fan plus a 20x20 MERV-13 filter and duct tape (a $30 backup that genuinely works)
  • Rescue inhalers, allergy meds, and eye drops for anyone with asthma, COPD, or pregnancy — refilled, not the expired one in the glovebox
  • A bad-air day plan: board games, a downloaded movie, and one indoor destination in Sandy or Hood River
  • The AirNow app installed and the Government Camp station favorited before you lose cell service on US-26
  • Full gas tank and a printed alternate route out (Lolo Pass Rd / OR-35) in case US-26 west is restricted

If the weekend is clean you carried masks for nothing. If it is not, this is the difference between a bad weekend and a ruined one.

  • Government Camp / Multorpor PM2.5 monitor, 24-hour AQI - Above 100 on any day before you leave, or above 120 on the evening of the 27th — that means the pooling is winning. (fire.airnow.gov or the AirNow app)
  • Austin Fire and The Narrows Fire acreage and direction of growth - Austin over ~12,000 acres, or either fire reported growing NORTH toward the Salmon River — those are the two that are on your side of the mountain. (inciweb.wildfire.gov and Oregon Dept. of Forestry incident page)
  • NWS Portland point forecast for Welches, and Red Flag Warnings for the Cascade foothills - Any mention of east or northeast wind for Fri–Sun, or a Red Flag Warning for east winds. That's the only thing that brings Grasshopper's 94,000 acres over the crest. (weather.gov/pqr — search Welches, OR)

If we wanted cleaner air, where would we go?

Ranked by how bad these dates have historically been at each place. The coast is not just cleaner today — it sits upwind of everything burning, so it only smokes during an east-wind reversal, which is the same event that would smoke out the house.

“Bad day / typical” is what the air actually did on Aug 26 – Sep 1 in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025 — 28 days per place. The first number is the bad day: one day in ten was worse than this. The second is the typical day, the middle of the range. We rank on the bad day rather than the typical one, because the bad day is what would spoil a weekend.

Both are converted onto the same scale as the “now” column, so every AQI figure in this table is comparable. That conversion matters more than it sounds: the model these come from runs about 2.5× high on the coast but close to true inland, so before correcting it the coast looked far worse than it is.

Every AQI figure above is on the ground-monitor scale — the same thing your phone shows. n/a means the model and the monitors disagree so sharply at that spot that we cannot honestly place it on that scale (steep terrain inside a coarse model grid cell — the Gorge is the usual culprit); those rows are sorted by today’s reading instead.

How this is made, and what it cannot do

Fire perimeters from NIFC, evacuation zones from Oregon OEM, weather and alerts from NWS, air quality from AirNow (Multorpor, 8.7 mi away). The forecast is judged by Claude Opus 5 on the live data above, sampled 5 times and pooled conservatively.

It is a judgement, never scored against an outcome. Nobody forecasts smoke this far out: NOAA's smoke model runs 48 hours and the EPA's air-quality forecast is for tomorrow. Two-to-six weeks ahead is what meteorologists call the predictability desert. Anyone giving you a number for the trip right now - us included - is giving you a base rate with a story attached.

How thin the history is. The air-quality record for this spot begins in 2022, so "normal" here is built from just 4 years (2022, 2023, 2024, 2025). In those 28 sampled days the worst single day was AQI 61, and none reached 100.

That record has never seen a bad Oregon smoke year — not 2020, when Portland sat above AQI 500 for days, nor 2017, 2018 or 2021. So the base rate below is drawn entirely from calm years, and the upper end of our range is an estimate rather than something history has shown us. It is the main reason not to read the good news too confidently.

Are these forecasts any good? Across 50 scored forecast-days, the air-quality model beat both simple baselines at 4 of 5 lead times. Where it does not, this page should not be trusted to out-guess them either.

AQI here means the highest 24-hour PM2.5 value touching a day, at the house, on the local monitor scale - the same thing your phone shows. The model's own restatement of the target: “I am forecasting the US AQI for PM2.5 as a 24-hour average — the single highest 24-hour AQI value touching any one calendar day of August 28, 29 and 30, 2026, at the house in Welches/Mt Hood Village — and reporting the worst of those three days, not their average. All numbers are on the local monitor scale, i.e. what the AirNow or PurpleAir app on your phone will display, already calibrated from the raw model output by the 0.55 factor in the pack; I have applied no further bias correction of my own.”
